Cognac and Scotch are two alcoholic beverages produced in specific regions of the world. Cognac is produced France whereas Scotch is only produced in Scotland. Yet, the main difference between cognac and scotch is that cognac is a type of brandy whereas scotch is a type of whiskey.

What is Cognac

Cognac can be defined as a variety of brandy, which is produced only in the Cognac region of France. As this definition indicates, Cognac is produced only in France and only six regions are allowed to produce this brew. These regions are Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Fins Bois, Bons Bois, Borderies, and Bois Ordinaires. In order for the brandy produced in these regions to be called Cognac, the manufacturers have to follow certain regulations.

Cognac is produced from a very dry, thin, and acidic white wine, which is excellent for distillation and aging. This white wine must contain at least 90% of Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard.

The fermented wine is double-distilled in a copper pot still. It is aged in Limousine or Tronçais oak casks. The wine must be kept inside the cask for a minimum of two years. Cognac is always blended, and the age of this brandy is determined from the youngest component used in the blend.

There are three official quality brands of Cognac named V.S., V.S.O.P., and X.O.
