Special rail cum road service to take you to Srinagar from Delhi
Srinagar is yet not connected with important Indian cities through direct trains. The same is the case with Delhi, the Indian capital. You cannot hope to reach Srinagar from Delhi by taking a single train as most of the trains take you to Jammu, which lies in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There is a rail route that is under construction, but a part of this is operational. This route allows you to take trains (2) from Delhi and reach Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. From Udhampur, you have to take a bus to reach Banihal and then catch a train again to reach Srinagar. This is an arrangement that has been done by Indian railways to make it easy for tourists to arrive in Srinagar through train. This is a rail cum road service, and you take a single ticket to cover the entire journey.
The facility was thrown open for public on July 5, 2014
This rail cum road service has been started on July 5 this year. This rail and bus connectivity allow passengers to reach Srinagar from Delhi by train on a single ticket though they have to get down on Udhampur and take buses arranged by railways to reach Banihal in between their journey. You only travel by bus from Udhampur to Banihal. From Banihal, passengers are provided seats in a special Diesel Electric Multiple Unit called DEMU.
